Biography
Emcee Sioui is a Wendat sound artist. His artistic practice, intentionally experimental, is rooted as much in various rap traditions as in foley techniques, electroacoustic and noise music, jazz, improvised music, and so-called classical music.
Driven by Indigenous politico-cultural issues and inspired by the worlds of Indigenous cultural mediators of all kinds, he creates in a spirit that is certainly contestatory, yet generative. For him, the creative process matters more than the finished product. His creative and intellectual journey brings to light the tensions inherent in existing as a Wendat person and as an Indigenous person. His approach aims to carry hope and pride for all Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island.
Emcee Sioui makes it resonate that Indigenous peoples are not relics, frozen in the past, and that they cannot be erased. In the spirit of Gerald Vizenor, he suggests that “we are not stuffed animals in a museum, nor characters in history books. We are present and fully endowed with agency.”
