Yan Riverin

Yan Riverin is a well-known figure in Pessamit. As a First Nations and Inuit Relations Advisor at Hydro-Québec and a former police chief in the community, he is also a man with a big heart and a creative spirit. Inspired by his family of musicians, the Beatles, Elvis Presley, and his grandfather—a singer of religious hymns—Yan discovered the guitar at 16 through a "permanent" loan from his uncle. While he has no plans for a professional music career, Yan composed Nikaui (Nipaiamianan), an original Christmas song in Innu-aimun, in 2015 with his friend Sébastien Vollant. Dedicated to mothers facing the challenges of the holiday season, the song highlights the importance of family and the joy of children’s laughter. Recorded with his daughter Alexiane, the project holds deep meaning for Yan. As a nod to tradition, he included a festive reinterpretation of La Destinée la Rose au Bois, telling the story of an Innu grandfather dancing in moccasins as his wife watches with a joyful gaze. Heartfelt and authentic, Yan Riverin’s holiday hymn warms the soul and celebrates his roots.
